Free letter tracing worksheets that teach stroke order

30 printable A4 sheets for children ages 4 to 7. Every one is free to download, with no sign-up.

Each sheet carries the same word twice, in German and in English, as large outline letters with numbered starting dots and arrows. Your child learns the order the strokes go in, not just the shape of the letter. There is a picture to color in first, so the writing starts after the fun part.

Animals

Cat, dog, rabbit, duck and pig. The animals most children want to write first.

Fruits

Apple, pear, cherry, lemon and grape. Short words with repeating letters, easy for a first try.

Vegetables

Carrot, pepper, onion, corn and pea. Familiar from the kitchen, which makes the words stick.

Nature

Sun, tree, flower, cloud and star. Simple shapes to color in before the writing starts.

Numbers

One to ten, written out as words. Ten sheets in counting order.

The same matching game, on paper

Look at any sheet and you will see two identical figures with an equals sign between them. That is the card-matching game from the Flip & Learn app, restated on paper so it works with a pencil and no screen, which means a child who enjoys these sheets already knows how the app works. Most children have letter formation mastered by around 7 and put the worksheets aside. Vocabulary keeps growing well past that, and the app carries on to 12 with spoken pronunciation, 21 themed categories and 9 languages.

Every file is a single A4 page, so printing at 100 percent with no scaling gives you the letter sizes the sheets were drawn for. Black and white is fine, the artwork is line work on white. If your printer defaults to Fit to page, turn that off, otherwise the tracing letters come out slightly small for young hands.
